During the last year there were many changes in freeware burning utilities. We finally could use CDBurnerXP 4.x. Some freeware burning tools disappeared and were replaced with commercial alternatives (e.g. AVS Disc Creator).
Developer of free burning tools had enough time to test their software with the new operating system Windows Vista. This system comes with DVD burning support instead of only CD as in Windows XP. However burning DVDs directly in Windows Vista is not too much comfortable. So there is a list of useful freeware burning software you can try and use for free.
CDBurnerXP
This burning tool is able to replace commercial software like Nero. Its fourth version comes with many improvements like the new user interface, cover designer, audio player or Video-DVD creation. CDBurnerXP offers very easy to use interface and it is suitable for beginners and experienced users.

Deep Burner Free
This burning tool didn't show up any changes in the last year. It is still fast and small burning software which is available in portable version too. Deep Burner Free is able to burn audio and data CD/DVD. If you need to burn DVD-Video, you need to have paid version of Deep Burner. The free version also offers interesting tool for creating autoruns. You could use integrated cover designer too.

InfraRecorder
This free burning software is very interesting. In my opinion it offers the best user interface of freeware tools for burning. It supports dual layer DVDs, burning ISO images (and BIN/CUE files), you could use it for preparing data and audio CD/DVD. Infra Recorder reminds me the early version of Nero Burning Rom software.

ImgBurn
If you are looking for easy to use burning software for working with ISO image files then try ImgBurn. This freeware tools supports BIN, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG a PDI files. If you don't need comfortable user interface for mastering of data and audio CD/DVD/Blu-ray discs then you could use ImgBurn this way too.

burnatonce
Burnatonce is simple burning utility for ISO images. It could be used for mastering too, however this part of software isn't much comfortable. As you can read on burnatonce's homepage, its developer hasn't enough time for it, so I am not sure about the future of this software.

ISO Recorder
This is not classical burning tool. It is rather an add-on for Windows XP/Vista. It improves your operating system with ability to burn the ISO images directly without any need of another burning software. So the ISO recorder is the tool for which were you looking for.

Easy Burning
This free burning software from Dirk Paehl is rather an old application; however it could be still usable for many users. It doesn't offer comfortable user interface and I couldn't recommend it for beginners. On its homepage you can find many other simple burning tools from the same developer.

Burrrn
This tool is intended for audio CD mastering. It supports CD-Text format. Just drag and drop your audio files on its window. Burrrn supports audio and tags from wav, mp3, mpc, ogg, aac, mp4, ape, flac, ofr, wv, tta, m3u, pls, fpl and cue files.

Express Burn
For audio and data CD/DVD mastering you can use Express Burn. It should be the fastest burning software as written on its homepage. I am not sure about this fact however. This software has commercial version too. Take care after its installation, it will offer other useful tools.

Burn4Free
This was adware software in the past. It seems that nowadays is this software clear, just be careful during its installation and uncheck any other tools to be installed. Burn4Free offers data and audio CD/DVD mastering, ISO images support and very colorful user interface. It supports WAV, FLAC, WavPack, WMA, M3U, MP3, MP2, MP1 OGG and CDA files.

FinalBurner Free
If you need to burn Blu-ray together with CDs and DVDs in freeware burning software, just try the free version of FinalBurner. Unlike the Deep Burner Free the FinalBurner Free supports DVD-Video burning. There is the autorun creation tool tool. FinalBurner Free supports ISO images. Video-CD burning and cover designer you can find in paid version.

cdrtfe - cdrtools Frontend
There is a Windows GUI for traditional Linux burning utility cdrtools. Cdrtfe offers most of the functionality from cdrtools. Try it special function which is able to create CDs with about 13% more data as usual. Of course, Cdrtfe support mastering of data and audio CD/DVD and DVD-Video.
